Pont l'Evêque Cheese Review
May 19th, '06

Pont l'Evêque is a stinky cheese. But it has more depth after the initial pungency than other cheeses like ripe Tilset or Limberger. Sweet, tangy, buttery. And stinky.

I picked this up at Whole Foods and I suspect it had been there a while. so it was probably at the "seriously ripe" point in it's life. But I'd have to say that it challenged the limits of my tolerance for stinky cheese. The wife wouldn't go near it, and suggested that perhaps it was time to buy a second cheese fridge.

At some point we need to do some traveling in Europe so that I can see how these French cheeses taste when they haven't been sitting in some hot cargo container for a trip half way around the world. Pont l'Evêque is suppose to be a good dessert cheese, but frankly I have trouble imagining finishing a wonderful meal with a stink like this. Call me an ugly American I guess. It wasn't foul or anything. Just stinky.

The cat loved it. And I do mean loved it. He licked the plate clean and then yowled for more. Do cats in France spend a lot of time harassing customers outside cheese shops? I think ours would.
