Quicke Red Leicester Cheese Review
May 15th, '06

Red Leicester is a very crumbly cheddar-like cheese with a mild tang. The main thing distinguishing the cheese is the color, which is created by adding ground annatto seeds. In the old days the color came from carrot juice. Too bad they don't do it that way anymore. Carrot flavored cheese sounds interesting. We tried the version from Quickes Cheese.

The "red" in the name is redundant, as there is no non-red Leicester cheese.

I tried nibbling the cheese, and piling it on chili cheese dogs. Both applications were pretty good. I also tried some cheese on toast and found it to have wonderful melting properties. I'll be making some Welsh rarebit with it later. The cat wasn't a huge fan or Red Leicester and I could only get him to try a couple tiny nibbles after much coaxing.

I'd have to say, with all the wonderful cheese out there, this isn't something I'd try again. The cheese was good, but not great. Although, with the interesting color, it would be an interesting addition to a cheese board.
