Greek Feta Cheese Review
May 4th, '06

Feta really needs to be crumbled on something of cooked in something, and we didn't do that. Just grabbing a chunk of Feta and gnawing on it isn't the best way to use it. Alas, I wasn't cooking anything that would have been crumbled Feta, so we just went with the gnawing strategy.

Feta has much less of a cheese flavor, sort of like cottage cheese, but there is a nice sourness and it's a bit more salty and tangy.

My wife is insisting I cook some Greek food so we can eat this properly. Once I get around to that I'll add more commentary.

The best Feta I have eaten was in the Pindus mountains in Northern Greece in 1980. I was taking part in a walking holiday and the cheese was brought down fresh every day to the lodgings in the different villages we stayed in. Great with olives and tomatoes it provided a salty flavour that counterpointed the Lamb we had with it.

The shepherds that made it brought it down from their mountain pastures in large tins, leaving their sheep in the charge of some fierce dogs. Probably neccesary when you realise that the mountains still have populations of bears and wolves.

bears and wolves and cheese - OH MY!
